Surfing in Hawaii

I have spent hours & hours pouring over websites & travel guides & the planning is pretty much done!

We will be visiting 3 Hawaiian Islands:

  • Oahu
  • Hawaii – The Big Island
  • Maui

The vacation was originally going to be 2 Islands in 3 weeks but a comment from Nancy S. after the part 1 post, has blown the budget all to heck. She said we needed to go to Maui & do the sunrise bike trip, the highlight of her Hawaii vacation.

Maui wasn’t even on our list. The 2 Islands we decided on were: Oahu – because that is where the conference is &  Hawaii - The Big Island because I am a Geologist who wants to the see Volcanoes National Park & see Lava running out of the ground (most of our vacations have side trips to see neat geological stuff – where 4-wheel drive vehicles are needed &/ or where hiking shoes are mandatory).

BUT -  we have 4 free days at the beginning of the vacation – still unplanned for, that’s fortuitous isn’t it? so I tell Dave about the Sunrise Bike tour:

  • a crater view of sunrise at 10,000′
  • a tour of Haleakala National Park & then down to 6,500′ for
  • a 38 mile downhill bike ride through fields of sugar cane & pineapple fields to the ocean.

A no brain er – sold! What’s another $1,000! ( for 3 nights accommodation on Kaanapali Beach, 4 days rental car, airfare & bike tour)  for  a once in a life time experience! How many times have I used that line?

Our trip is 3 -Part:

Part 3:

  • Car Rental:  Economy car booked through Hotwire

  • Enjoy the beaches & snorkeling

Well that’s it for Part 2. I am sure I forgot some info & we also like  to have some leeway to be spontaneous when we see something we would like to do.

I am working on Part 3 now (otherwise known as Sticker Shock) Where I’ll cost out our trip & compare it to some packages with pros & cons of each.

Let me know if there is an activity that we MUST do or if you have any insights which would be helpful.
