I became an American citizen a few years ago &  the Declaration of Independence really affected me – in a HUGE way. Especially the following sentence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

I was born a Canadian so I, as many do, took that sentence for granted.

but as  I studied for the American  Citizenship exam I realized that many can’t pursue happiness because  of the conditions surrounding them; war, poverty, & persecution being some of the factors.

It’s complicated:

When I was younger I thought I could  do something major to change the world & make it a better place, I don’t think like that anymore. I think smaller scale now, community scale or even on a scale of those whose lives I touch. What can I do to promote Happiness – Happiness envelopes so much but it can be incredibly simple. If we create opportunity in our daily lives to BE HAPPY, others may be affected by it.

For example:

I walk outside through my garden  in the morning, with my coffee, deriving pleasure from the flowers, the fragrances, watching the hummingbirds & butterflies flitting among the blossoms. I think; I’ll pick some flowers to bring into the house & maybe I’ll cut some for my neighbor to brighten her day. I’m feeling happy, I imagine my neighbor will feel happiness - and a ripple effect is created – all from a single act of feeling happy. She may decide in her happiness to spread it to someone else.

We women are multi-taskers & we wake up in the morning figuring out how we will juggle the day:

The list can  go on & on with things to do but let’s add something – 1 Thing That will make me  HAPPY TODAY.

  • It can be as simple as waking up 1/2 hour early & having some quiet time  or time to pray or meditate.
  • Going for a walk through the yard & smelling the spring air fragrant with the aroma of blossoms. (You do need to ignore the weeds in the flower beds though)
  • Making time for friendships & have lunch or coffee with someone special.
  • Date night with your special someone -  movie & popcorn on the sofa works.

I am a cup half full girl  and being Happy is a natural state for me but I still need to consciously think & plan to be Happy.


My HAPPY  list for the weekend: (it’s supposed to be warm & sunny so the list is easier to make)

  • Family is coming to visit – that make me happy! SO FAMILY TIME with nothing to do & no where to go!!
  • Planting flowers & vegetables in their new beds.
  • Doing some biking.
  • Cooking with the kids.
  • Playing with my Grand Puppy.
  • Camp Fire at Sunset & roasting marshmallows.
  • A quiet cup of coffee, in the early morning hours, sitting by the lake & watching & listening to the loons (extra bonus!)
